A Wells River woman faces DUI and child cruelty charges after a single-vehicle crash in Ryegate over the weekend.
Vermont State Police responded to Scott Highway, south of Pinehurst Road, around 10:50 p.m. on June 8 for a report of a crash. Troopers found a 2009 GMC Acadia that had struck the guardrail on the south side of the roadway. The driver, Sarah Higgins, 33, was uninjured but showed signs of impairment, police said. Inside the vehicle with Higgins were two children: a 2-month-old and a 2-year-old.
Higgins was taken into custody and transported to the St. Johnsbury Barracks for processing. She was later released on a citation to appear in Caledonia County Superior Court on June 29. She was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and two counts of cruelty to a child. The vehicle was totaled.
The children were not injured. State police did not release details on the children's condition or whether they were relatives of Higgins.
