Georgia running back Dante Dowdell was injured in an off-campus ATV accident, Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart confirmed at SEC media days. Dowdell is receiving care at Shepherd Center in Atlanta, a facility known for spinal cord and brain injury rehabilitation. The tailback transferred from Kentucky after rushing for 560 yards and three touchdowns last season.
SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said Monday the conference is having “serious talks” about breaking away from the NCAA, citing frustration among school presidents over issues such as congressional legislation, eligibility rules and player payment transparency. Sankey emphasized that leaving the NCAA is not the preferred solution but noted the league’s 13 national championships last season as a reason to stay within the current framework.
The SEC is introducing a nine-game conference schedule through 2029 to boost strength of schedule for the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff. The change means several long-standing rivalries will go on hiatus, including Tennessee-Florida for the first time in 37 years, as well as LSU-Alabama, Florida-LSU and Georgia-Tennessee.
Missouri running back Ahmad Hardy, who was shot in the leg at a concert in Mississippi on May 10, has been medically cleared to return. Coach Eli Drinkwitz said Hardy’s recovery efforts have been praised and called the incident a learning opportunity for student-athletes.
