An invasive insect that has killed millions of ash trees across the country is now spreading in Newport, according to police. Staff from the Vermont Urban and Community Forestry Program (VT UCF) held an informational session at the Gateway Center to raise awareness about the emerald ash borer. Attendees learned how to identify ash tree species and signs of infestation, and what steps can be taken to prepare.
Orleans County Forester Jared Nunery introduced the presenters and gave background on the insect. He said that while the emerald ash borer is not new to the area, it had not been spreading until last summer. The insect was first detected in Orleans County in 2019, in Derby Line.
