A downed power line on Lake Road has left about 1,600 homes and businesses without electricity in the Newport area, according to the Vermont Electric Co-op. The outage includes a large portion of Main Street in Newport.

Utility crews are working to repair the damage. The co-op estimates power will be restored by 4 p.m. or later on Tuesday. The cause of the downed line was not immediately clear.

NEK will follow up on the restoration status and any further details on the cause of the outage.
