Newport's Wednesdays on the Waterfront concert series is in full swing, drawing hundreds to the shores of Lake Memphremagog for free live music and food trucks each week.

The event, organized by Vero Rancourt and Andrea Carbine of the nearby Le Belvedere restaurant, began with a simple idea. "Magog on the other side of the lake has so much going on that we thought maybe we could make a little something happen," Rancourt said.

Attendees come by land and water. "It gets the community together, gets everybody out and it's a great way to spend a Wednesday, beautiful on the water listening to live music again," said Chris Steele, a concertgoer. Sandy Wing added, "The fun, the music, the people and you get to see a lot of classmates and it's just a nice time to get together."

Newport Mayor Rick Ufford-Chase said the event shifts attention to downtown progress, including work on the "pit" left from the Kingdom Con. "Everything that brings people to downtown Newport and helps them recognize Newport as their center of gravity is good for this city," he said.

This week's performer was Ryan Sweezey and The Midnight Walkers. The series continues every Wednesday through August 5.
