The American Red Cross is opening emergency evacuation shelters in Newport, Vermont, and Haverhill, New Hampshire, ahead of a threat of severe thunderstorms expected Tuesday evening.

The shelters will open at 6 p.m. at the Newport Municipal Building Gym, 222 Main St., in Newport, and the North Haverhill Administrative Building, 2975 Dartmouth College Highway, in Haverhill.

The Red Cross is urging residents and visitors, particularly campers and others spending time outdoors, to move to sturdy shelter before conditions deteriorate. People using the shelters are encouraged to bring prescription medications, special dietary foods, extra clothing, blankets, hygiene items, chargers and other personal necessities.

Pets are welcome, though owners should bring crates or carriers, food, medications, leashes and other supplies for their animals.

The Red Cross also reminded residents to stay weather-aware, seek shelter immediately if a severe thunderstorm or tornado warning is issued, avoid flooded roadways and use generators safely during any power outages.

Anyone needing storm-related assistance can call 1-800-RED CROSS, while those looking to report damage or seek additional help can dial 2-1-1.
