Bridge No. 6 on School Street over the Lamoille River in Wolcott will stay closed around the clock until at least September 25, according to the Vermont Agency of Transportation. The closure, in effect since construction began, is part of a project to replace the original bridge built in 1928. A temporary bridge that had been in use since 2018 was removed.
Motorists are directed to a signed detour using Flat Iron Road and Vermont Route 15. Starting next week, drivers on Route 15 near the School Street intersection should expect intermittent lane closures between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays, with flaggers controlling alternating one-way traffic.
Crews are currently pouring concrete for wingwalls and backwalls at both abutments, according to VTrans. The project is scheduled to be finished by the end of September.
NEK will be looking into the history of the original 1928 bridge and the temporary structure that served from 2018 to 2026.
