Unsettled weather is expected to bring heavy downpours to portions of Vermont and the North Country from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday evening, raising the risk of flash flooding in some areas, particularly the southern Green Mountains and southeastern Vermont, according to the WCAX First Alert Weather Team.
Rainfall totals will vary widely. Areas north of Burlington and north of US-2 are likely to see between a quarter-inch and 1.25 inches of rain, which is not expected to cause flooding. South of Burlington, Montpelier, and St. Johnsbury, totals could range from 0.75 inches to 2 inches, with locally higher amounts of 2 to 4 inches possible in the central Green Mountains, Mad River Valley, or wherever heavier downpours set up.
Southern Vermont faces the greatest risk. Rutland and Windsor counties and the Upper Valley have a better chance of seeing 1.5 to 4 inches of rain, with localized totals over 4 inches. Southern Vermont could see 2 to 4 inches widespread, with pockets of 4 to 6 inches in the southern Green Mountains and parts of Windham and southern Windsor County. New York's North Country can expect 0.75 to 2 inches, with pockets of 2 to 4 inches.
Flash flooding is possible in low-lying, flood-prone, and poor drainage areas. Creeks and streams could overflow their banks in locations that see excessive rain, and roads could wash out. Larger rivers are expected to stay in their banks but will rise sharply.
For most of northern Vermont and the Champlain Valley, the rain will be beneficial for dry lawns and gardens, with cooler, showery weather continuing into Wednesday and Thursday.
