Lyndonville road closed for permanent bridge repairs two years after flooding

Nearly two years after severe summer flooding in 2024, Lyndonville's Red Village Road is closed again for permanent bridge replacement. The $5 million project will replace two temporary bridges installed after the original spans and more than three-quarters of a mile of pavement were washed away.

Travelers entering Red Village Road from Route 5 see signs warning of the closure ahead. The detour adds 5 to 10 miles to local trips. Work is expected to last until mid-November.

Lyndon Town Administrator Justin Smith said the town suffered over $17 million in infrastructure damage from the 2024 floods. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is covering 75% of repair costs, with state funds filling most of the rest. “We are thankful that we are going to get help, but in the short term, we’ve had to take out lines of credit for this, so we are still working our way through the paperwork,” Smith said.

Danielle Lacaillade, who lives in nearby Kirby, recalled being stranded at home for two days after the flooding. “It is kind of a pain in the butt. You definitely go to town a lot less,” she said. “Make sure you plan ahead so there are a lot fewer issues.”

Smith described the permanent fix as “the final project of trying to get back to whole.” Heavy equipment on the road signals that construction is underway.
