Vermont State Police arrested a Wells River woman early Tuesday after a single-vehicle crash on Scott Highway in Ryegate where two young children were in the car.
Troopers responded around 10:50 p.m. on June 8 to the area near Pinehurst Road after a report of a crash. The 2009 GMC Acadia, driven by Sarah Higgins, 33, had left the road and struck a guardrail. The vehicle was totaled but no one was injured, police said.
Higgins showed signs of alcohol impairment and was taken into custody. Inside the car were a 2-month-old infant and a 2-year-old child. She was transported to the St. Johnsbury barracks for processing and later released on a citation for DUI and two counts of cruelty to a child.
Higgins is scheduled to appear in Caledonia County Superior Court on June 29.
NEK will be looking into whether state child-protection police have opened a concurrent investigation into the children’s welfare.
