EAST CHARLESTON, The NorthWoods Stewardship Center is working with the Northeastern Vermont Development Association on a project to address erosion problems on class 4 roads in the Northeast Kingdom.

Class 4 roads in Vermont are not maintained by towns or the state, leaving them in ungraded, often muddy condition. NorthWoods staff visited many of these roads and found that while some erosion issues had already been fixed by towns, others remained.

The partnership, funded under the federal Clean Water Act of 1977, aims to identify problem spots, suggest repairs, and prevent future runoff. NorthWoods is a subcontractor of NVDA, which receives the grant through the Two Rivers Ottauquechee Regional Commission.

The expected result is a list of project outlines that towns can use to cut down on contaminated runoff and protect water quality.
