Thursday has been declared a First Alert Weather Day by WCAX as a potent storm system brings multiple hazards to the Northeast Kingdom and surrounding areas.
A Wind Advisory runs from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday for all of northern New York and most of Vermont, including the Northeast Kingdom. Gusts of 45 to 55 mph are expected areawide, with up to 60 mph possible near Malone, New York. With trees fully leafed out, downed limbs and scattered power outages are likely.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed the region under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather Thursday afternoon. Damaging wind gusts are the primary threat, and a brief spin-up tornado cannot be ruled out across the Connecticut River Valley. Bowing storm structures are possible. The best chance for severe storms lies south of a line from Saranac Lake to Montpelier, but northern areas should remain alert through the evening.
Rainfall totals of a quarter to a half inch are expected for most of the region, with up to an inch east of the Green Mountains and across the Adirondacks. Southern Vermont could see 1 to 2 inches locally if thunderstorms develop. The flood risk is low, but brief heavy rain is possible with any afternoon storms. High-profile vehicles should use extra caution on roads.
