The ONE Response Team, serving Orleans and Northern Essex County, continues to meet weekly to coordinate community resources during the pandemic. On Friday the team released new updates.

The United Church on Third Street in Newport has expanded its food shelf, offering extra bags available Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors are asked to ring the doorbell upon arrival.

Beginning May 4, the NEKCA Food Shelf will be open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Masks remain available through the NEK Council on Aging at (800) 642-5119 or (802) 334-2190, and through NEKCA at (802) 334-7316.

The Prevention, Intervention, Treatment and Recovery Collaborative (PITR) has emergency services postcards to distribute. Interested community members can contact PITR Coordinator Sunny Naughton via email to arrange pickup or dropoff.

The Hearts Project, started by Derby Elementary School and promoted by local artist Ally Howell, has drawn an excellent response, according to organizers. Residents are placing hearts in windows at home and work to show solidarity with essential workers.

“I encouraged Derby Elementary School families to participate in The Hearts Project because it not only shows gratitude to those essential workers, it raises community spirit,” said Stacey Urbin, principal of Derby Elementary School. “We are promoting a common strength and spirit within the community.”

To participate, take a photo of your heart and send it to Sunny Naughton to be featured in future communications.
