A Newark man was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence after Vermont State Police responded to a report of an intoxicated person at a residence on Bugbee Crossing Road in Burke.
Thomas Gilman, 58, was taken into custody at 9:12 p.m. on July 5, 2026, according to a police statement. Troopers from the St. Johnsbury Barracks had been alerted to an intoxicated individual who needed to be removed from the residence. Gilman had been the subject of earlier calls for service that evening as a potential impaired driver, but had not been located at that time.
When troopers arrived at the residence, they found Gilman and the vehicle he had reportedly been driving earlier. During the encounter, police said they detected signs of impairment. Gilman was arrested on suspicion of DUI and transported to the St. Johnsbury Barracks for processing.
He was issued a citation to appear in Caledonia County Superior Court, Criminal Division on July 27, 2026, at 8:30 a.m.
NEK will be looking into the nature of the earlier calls for service that evening.
