Christopher Sargent, 48, of Waterford, and Heather Collins, 46, of St. Johnsbury, were released on conditions Friday after their arrests on multiple assault charges stemming from an incident Thursday evening.

According to court documents, Sargent and Collins were part of a group in front of the St. Johnsbury Welcome Center at about 6:41 p.m. when a verbal argument escalated into a physical attack on a man who had been using an ATM across the street.

Sargent is alleged to have threatened the victim with a hammer. During the arrest, Collins is accused of kicking officers. Additionally, police say Sargent intentionally shorted the electrical system at the St. Johnsbury police station while in a holding cell.

Police noted Sargent has an extensive criminal history. He faces a charge of aggravated assault. Collins faces charges of simple assault and two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer.
