Seven Days asked seven Vermont chefs and restaurant owners to name their favorite summer snack shacks. The recommendations span the state, from long-standing classics like Joe's Snack Bar in Jericho to newer spots like Honeypie in Jamaica.

Among the picks: Cajun's Snack Bar in Lowell, which serves fried alligator and Cajun-style fare; Canteen Creemee in Waitsfield, known for its banh mi; and Road Runner in Manchester Center, praised for its fried chicken sandwich. Several chefs also mentioned old favorites like Al's French Frys in South Burlington and the White Cottage Snack Bar in Woodstock.

Maggie Fischer, executive chef and co-owner of the Buttery in St. Johnsbury, grew up in Mendon and recalled visits to the Village Snack Bar and White Cottage Snack Bar for fried clams and chocolate-vanilla twist cones.
