About 300 people gathered under a tent on the Craftsbury Common campus Saturday for Sterling College's 27th commencement ceremony, which was also its last. The college is closing after more than a quarter-century of operation.
Piper Matthew Brouard led the procession of faculty, board members, and graduating seniors. Allison Hooper, chair of the board of trustees, offered a welcome, and President Scott Thomas spoke to the Class of 2026. Thomas acknowledged the institution's end while honoring the graduates' achievements.
The ceremony featured the usual joy of commencement, but was marked by an undercurrent of sadness and resolve as the college community faced the closure.
NEK will be looking into plans for the Sterling College campus and any efforts to preserve its educational mission.
