A Brownington man pleaded not guilty this week to a charge that he prevented a woman from leaving an apartment where she was being beaten, according to Newport City Police.
Police said officers were called to a Pleasant Street address around 9:27 a.m. on June 8 for a reported assault. A woman told officers she had been kept from leaving an apartment on the same street and beaten, court papers state. She had blood, swelling and bruising on the bridge of her nose, according to Patrolman Colin Sykes.
Jennifer L. Sanville, 40, of Troy has been charged with aggravated assault and criminal threatening in the case. She pleaded innocent and was ordered held without bail by Judge Rory Thibault.
Stanley Crowe, 52, was present during the assault and actively blocked the woman from leaving to get help, Patrolman Sykes said in an affidavit. Crowe pleaded not guilty to a related charge. He is being held pending further court proceedings.
