ST. JOHNSBURY, A local man faces a stolen property charge after police say he was found sleeping on a bridge with a stolen backpack.
Joseph Greenwood, 45, of St. Johnsbury, was taken into custody July 8 after St. Johnsbury Police responded to reports of stolen equipment from Vermont Rail Systems. The thefts were reported on July 7 and July 8.
According to police, officers found Greenwood asleep on the stairs of the Portland Street Bridge. The stolen backpack was under his head being used as a pillow. He was arrested without incident.
Greenwood was released on a citation to appear in Caledonia County Superior Court on Aug. 24.
Police say the investigation into the theft of several thousand dollars in equipment is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call 802-748-2314.
