Several hikers were rescued in the White Mountains over the July 4 holiday weekend, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game. The agency responded to multiple accidents involving injured hikers who required assistance off the trails.
Col. Kevin Jordan of New Hampshire Fish and Game said that more than three-quarters of rescues occur because people do not heed weather conditions and come unprepared. "They are going to fall and twist their knee, they are going to slip on a wet rock and hurt their ankle, we expect that. But these ones where people are lost and they just don't have the right equipment, they can be avoided and should be," Jordan said.
Among the incidents was a two-day search for a missing hiker on Mount Washington, which ended successfully. Experts emphasize the importance of telling someone your plans, carrying water, staying on trails, and knowing personal limits.
