The Vermont Department of Health's Newport office has reported a case of rabies in a raccoon in Orleans County. The detection of a rabid animal often signals a heightened risk of the disease in the area, police said.

Rabies is a viral infection that attacks the brain and is fatal to both animals and humans. It spreads through bites, open cuts, or contact with mucous membranes. Dogs and cats are required by law to be vaccinated. Pet owners who suspect their animal has encountered a potentially rabid animal should contact a veterinarian. People who are bitten should wash the wound immediately and call a health care provider.

Police advise reporting any wild or stray animal acting strangely to the local animal control officer or the rabies hotline at 1-800-4-RABIES. Stray animals should not be picked up, as they may carry the disease even if no symptoms are visible.
