Bristol police officers responded to an unusual call Thursday afternoon to help a black bear cub that had gotten its head stuck inside a plastic jug.

The Bristol Police Department said the chief of police and a lieutenant were notified that a cub was trapped, with its mother nearby. While waiting for a New Hampshire Fish and Game biologist to arrive, the lieutenant spotted an opportunity to pick up the cub without the mother bear noticing. He moved the cub into his cruiser and drove a safe distance away.

The chief and lieutenant then cut the jug off the cub's head and released it back into the woods, where it was reunited with its mother.

Police said the incident is a reminder to properly dispose of trash and containers so they do not become traps for wildlife.
