A poem published recently in the Hardwick Gazette offers a lyrical portrait of the Hardwick area, written by Woodbury resident Janet Slayton. The piece was submitted for the Verse-Village celebration of April Poetry Month.

Slayton’s poem touches on the area’s history in the granite industry, its schools, recreational opportunities along water and trails, and community resources such as a food shelf, thrift store, and rescue squad. The poem also acknowledges crime as an issue but praises local police efforts.

The work paints the Hardwick area as a welcoming community of old-timers and newcomers who share a spirit of cooperation and volunteerism. “This welcoming community of togetherness, spirit and love is continually caring and sharing,” the poem reads.

The Hardwick Gazette, an independent weekly covering the Hardwick area, published the poem in its June 9 edition.
