A newspaper that has spent the past quarter-century documenting the history of Vermont's Northeast Kingdom is shutting down. The Northland Journal will publish its final issue in July, according to publisher Scott Wheeler.
Wheeler said the decision came down to a combination of rising costs and personal reasons, including the death of his wife, Penny. He described the choice as difficult but necessary.
Current subscribers will not be left without a local read. Wheeler said he has arranged for them to receive the North Star Monthly starting with the August edition. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The Northland Journal has been a fixture in the region since 2001, focusing on historical features and local stories often overlooked by larger outlets.
