A community garden behind the Dailey Memorial Library in Derby is producing a wide variety of vegetables and berries, all available free to the public.
Volunteers led by Sue Lucas maintain the garden, which includes tomatoes, kale, chard, squash, pumpkins, peas, cucumbers, turnips, corn, cabbage, blueberries, raspberries, and more. Fruit and nut trees from Kyle Albee of Charleston line the property, offering peaches, pears, apples, and several nut varieties.
“We like to see the elderly come here; they can’t always buy the vegetables in the store,” Lucas said.
The group has placed a refrigerator next to the ice cream stand at the Derby common, allowing people to pick up fresh produce at their convenience. The garden also accepts contributions of excess harvest from the community.
