Newport City Police Chief Travis Bingham told the City Council on Monday evening that a group of 10 to 15 people hanging out at the waterfront gazebo has been a concern since warm weather arrived. Councilor Sarah Pare raised the issue, saying community members have complained about inappropriate language and behavior and are afraid to walk near the boardwalk.
“It’s been on my radar since the warm weather has been around,” Bingham said. He noted that about half that number were causing similar disruptions at the same spot last year.
Tables and benches at the waterfront have been removed with permission from the Vermont Department of Buildings and General Services, triggering additional complaints.
In other business, Kate Stallman of the North Country Chamber of Commerce announced that the 20th annual Chili Fest will be held on September 26.
