NEWPORT, A Newport man faces multiple charges after a fight on the Newport Boardwalk on the evening of June 23, according to police.
Geromy J. Wells, 41, was taken into protective custody around 7:17 p.m. after officers found him appearing extremely intoxicated, the Newport Police Department said. Once in custody, police allege Wells became aggressive, kicking and headbutting the cruiser, making threats, and spitting at officers. During transport to North Country Hospital for medical clearance, he continued spitting and attempted to bite officers, according to police.
Wells is charged with assault of a protected professional, assault of a protected professional with bodily fluids, obstruction of justice, violations of conditions of release, and disorderly conduct. Police said a subsequent investigation revealed Wells had appeared in court in June 2026 and was issued conditions of release barring violent, threatening, or tumultuous behavior. Police also described his criminal history as lengthy, with 13 convictions.
Wells was medically cleared and transported to Northern State Correctional Facility. He is scheduled to appear in Orleans District Court.
