NEWPORT, A Newport man was arrested Thursday evening following a fight on the Newport Boardwalk, according to police.
Geromy J. Wells, 41, was taken into protective custody after officers found him appearing extremely intoxicated. He then became aggressive, kicking and headbutting a police cruiser, spitting at officers, and attempting to bite them during transport to North Country Hospital for medical clearance. Wells was later taken to Northern State Correctional Facility.
He faces two counts of assault of a protected professional, one involving bodily fluids, as well as obstruction of justice, disorderly conduct, and violation of conditions of release.
Police said Wells had been issued conditions of release in June prohibiting violent behavior and has 13 prior convictions. He was scheduled to appear Friday in Orleans District Court.
