A new projection shows that more than a quarter of private colleges across the United States face a significant risk of closure. Sterling College in Craftsbury Common, Vermont, has announced it will shut down at the conclusion of the current semester, highlighting the financial pressures on small institutions.
The projection, reported by The Hechinger Report, underscores a deepening crisis in higher education as declining enrollment and rising costs strain private colleges. Sterling College, a small liberal arts school, is among those affected.
NEK will be looking into what resources are available for displaced students and whether other Vermont colleges face similar threats.
