A veteran Vermont State Police trooper has been tapped to lead the Derby Barracks. Sgt. Debra Munson was promoted to commander effective Nov. 8, succeeding Lt. Walter Smith, who will retire in early 2021.

Munson began her career with the state police in January 2011. After graduating from the Vermont Police Academy, she served as a trooper at the Derby Barracks before transferring to the St. Johnsbury Barracks in January 2017 as a detective trooper in the Criminal Division. She was promoted to sergeant and patrol commander at the Derby Barracks in May 2017.

Munson also served on the Vermont State Police Tactical Services Unit from 2014 to 2016 and has been a member of the Members Assistance Team since 2018. She is an instructor on use of force and defensive tactics for the Vermont State Police and at the Vermont Police Academy in Pittsford.

The Derby Barracks provides police coverage across Essex and Orleans counties, including 25.25 miles of Interstate 91 and a substantial portion of Vermont's border with Canada. The commander oversees law enforcement services for those communities and coordinates with local agencies, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the FBI.
