The 14-U Kingdom All-Stars, representing the Northeast Kingdom, opened Vermont's Babe Ruth state championship with a 6-4 win over Brattleboro Post 5 on Sunday at Maple Street Park and Pool in Essex.
Maddox Stacey led the offense with three singles in four at-bats, stealing three bases. Linkin Simpson doubled to drive in a run in the first inning, and Zack Brown singled and Wyatt Libbey grounded out to add runs in the third.
Barrett Somers earned the win, pitching five innings of scoreless relief, striking out nine and walking six. Shaun Emery-Greene took the loss for Brattleboro after allowing six runs (three earned) on 10 hits over seven innings.
The NEK team collected 10 hits, with Damien LeBlanc chipping in two. Emery-Greene drove in three runs for Brattleboro, finishing 2-for-4.
The All-Stars next play Friday at 1 p.m. against Barre. A win would send them to a Saturday noon game; a loss would put them in a Friday 7 p.m. elimination game.
