Communities across Orleans County are holding Fourth of July events this weekend, marking the nation's 250th birthday with hometown traditions including parades, barbecues, and fireworks.

Barton’s celebration at Roaring Brook Park on Saturday features a tractor pull at 9 a.m., a horse pull at 10 a.m., a parade at 2 p.m., and an AC/DC tribute band at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10, children 10 and younger free.

Brighton spreads its festivities over three days. Friday brings country artist Jamie Lee Thurston at Lakeside Park at 6 p.m. Saturday includes a chicken barbecue at noon and a human foosball tournament at 1 p.m. Sunday features a cardboard boat race at 1 p.m. and fireworks over Island Pond around 9:30 p.m.

Derby’s parade starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, preceded by a one-mile road race. A ping pong ball drop from a flyover occurs at 12:30 p.m. at North Country Union Junior High School.

Greensboro’s “Funky Fourth” begins Saturday at 10 a.m. with a parade on Breezy Avenue. A community picnic, craft fair, and farmers market follow on the town green. Evening events at the Highland Center for the Arts include a concert by the Vermont Philharmonic.

Jay Village Inn hosts its 19th annual fireworks display Saturday at dusk, with dining and dancing.

Newport’s celebration at Gardner Park on Saturday offers free tethered balloon rides from 4 to 6 p.m., a cornhole tournament at 5 p.m., music from Evansville Transit Authority 6 to 9 p.m., and fireworks at 9:30 p.m.

Westmore begins Saturday with a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m., a reading of Frederick Douglass’s speech at 12:30 p.m., and a chicken barbecue with children’s activities from 1 to 5 p.m. The boat parade sets out at 3 p.m. from Crescent Beach.
