A Grafton County man convicted of murdering his cousin will serve at least 35 years in prison. Lance Goodrich, 44, was sentenced Monday for the 2021 shooting death of Brooke Goodrich, 25.
Prosecutors had requested a sentence of 45 years to life, but the judge ordered a minimum of 35 years. Defense attorney Mark Sisti had asked for 25 years to life.
Becky Springer, the victim's mother, addressed Goodrich in court while holding her daughter's ashes. “When you die, I wish you get the afterlife deserved for being a horrible person here on Earth,” she said.
Goodrich was convicted in May of second-degree murder for shooting his cousin in the head at her Orford home. Assistant Attorney General Bethany Durand described the killing as “an unwarranted execution of an unarmed woman,” saying Goodrich shot her when she opened her front door on November 20, 2021.
Sisti argued the state's request was excessive, noting his client had no prior criminal record. “I'm appreciative that the judge rejected the attorney general's office, what I thought was an extreme number,” Sisti said. He added that he plans to appeal the verdict.
