Police in Orford are warning residents about a text message scam that impersonates New Hampshire courts. The fraudulent messages claim the recipient missed a court date or owes a fine, and often include a link or QR code to make a payment.

Police note that the New Hampshire Judicial Branch does not send text messages with QR codes, notices of missed dates, or requests for fine payments. Anyone who receives such a message should not click any links, scan any QR codes, or provide personal or financial information. The message should be deleted immediately.

NEK will be looking into whether similar scams have been reported elsewhere in the Northeast Kingdom and what steps local courts are taking to alert the public.
