A man who had been a fugitive from justice for more than a decade on sexual assault charges is the subject of a new arrest warrant, after police say he violated the terms of his bail.

The Grafton County Sheriff's Department said Simon David Nelson, 41, faces four counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault, stemming from alleged incidents between 2012 and 2016. Police said Nelson was arrested in Iowa on unrelated charges of assault and indecent exposure, and was returned to New Hampshire by U.S. Marshals on June 3.

Less than a day after his return, the Grafton County Attorney's Office requested that Nelson be released on personal recognizance bail, meaning he was not required to post money or property. Police now say he failed to live at the address he provided as a condition of that release. He is now wanted on a new charge of breach of bail.

The Grafton County Sheriff's Office emphasized that the decision to release Nelson on bail was made by the county attorney's office, not by sheriff's deputies or the court.

NEK will be looking into the circumstances that led to the Grafton County Attorney's Office requesting the release of a man wanted for a decade on felony sex assault charges.
