A New Hampshire man faces federal charges after he allegedly assaulted a U.S. Marshal in Vermont. Christopher Palermo, 49, of Andover, N.H., was taken into custody in April after he bit a deputy U.S. Marshal on the arm while being arrested at a home in Groton, the U.S. Attorney's Office for Vermont said.

Palermo was wanted on several outstanding arrest warrants from New Hampshire at the time. Federal police said he injured the deputy marshal while resisting arrest. On Tuesday, a federal judge in Burlington ordered Palermo detained pending trial. A conviction on the charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

NEK will be looking into the status of Palermo's pending New Hampshire warrants and any prior criminal history.
