The Sutton Selectboard awarded a culvert replacement contract on South Ridge Road to Darryl Matthews Excavating for $181,325 at its May 28 meeting. The bid was the lowest of seven received, with proposals ranging from $181,325 to $471,449.
Nate Sicard of Ruggles Engineering recommended the low bidder, stating all seven bidders had the necessary expertise. The board voted to sign the contract that evening so work could begin the next day.
In other business, the board accepted a $21,700 junk cleanup bid for a Pudding Hill Road residence from Nick's Landscaping and Firewood on a 2-1 vote. The property owners have a notarized agreement to pay $21,000; the town has placed a lien for that amount. The town will cover the $700 overage and an $800 attorney fee.
Adam Bruggeman, Sutton's representative to the regional waste district, reported that fees are increasing and items previously free will now carry costs. Bruggeman said he voted against the increases because Sutton pays per capita and the hikes are significant, potentially leading to illegal dumping.
Road crew member Shane reported renting a mower for the first two weeks of August at $4,500 per week and said he would seek a lower price. A paving contractor will soon address a road issue on Calendar Brook Road. The town expects paperwork for a paving grant on Underpass Road but had not yet received it.
Town Clerk/Treasurer Patti McClure informed the board that a propane company will switch out tanks June 1 as the town ends its arrangement with its current supplier.
