Flood warning active for Caledonia County through Thursday evening

The National Weather Service in Burlington has issued a flood warning for Caledonia County and parts of central Vermont, effective until 10:45 p.m. Thursday.

The warning covers portions of central and northeast Vermont, including Orange, Washington, and Caledonia counties. Forecasters say urban areas and small streams may experience flooding caused by excessive rainfall.

As of 7:42 p.m., the public reported heavy rain in the warned area due to thunderstorms. Flooding is already occurring, with between 1 and 2 inches of rain having fallen. An additional 0.5 to 1 inch is possible.

Locations that may experience flooding include Barre, Montpelier, Barre City, Barre Town, Websterville, E F Knapp State Airport, East Montpelier, Williamstown, Berlin, Plainfield, Orange, Washington, Middlesex, Northfield, Moretown, Groton, South Barre, Lower Websterville, Graniteville, and Upper Graniteville.

The NWS advises people to turn around, don't drown, when encountering flooded roads, noting that most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
