A Derby man faces multiple charges after Vermont State Police say he fired a handgun near responding troopers following a crash late July 4.

Troopers responded around 11:20 p.m. to an OnStar crash report near U.S. Route 5 and Derby Pond Road. OnStar indicated possible injuries and that shots had been fired. Officers found a 2023 GMC Sierra that had struck a tree in a backyard, with front-end and ballistic damage. A passerby reported seeing a man with a handgun running in traffic on Route 5.

As troopers approached the crashed vehicle, a gunshot was fired from behind a nearby tree. Police identified the suspect as David Gendreau, 46, and took him into custody without injury. Gendreau then resisted being placed in a patrol vehicle, police said.

Investigators allege Gendreau had been driving on his property before the crash, fired several rounds from inside the truck, struck a neighbor's unoccupied vehicle, and fired a round that crossed the roadway as troopers arrived.

Gendreau was taken to North Country Hospital for evaluation, then lodged at Northern State Correctional Facility on $500 bail and held for violating conditions of release. He is charged with disorderly conduct, recklessly endangering another person, unlawful mischief, and resisting arrest.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information can contact Trooper Anthony Rice at 802-334-8881.

NEK will be looking into the conditions of release Gendreau is accused of violating.
