The first week of astronomical summer brought mild temperatures, but a building ridge is expected to push temperatures into the upper 80s and low 90s starting Wednesday, June 30. Combined with high humidity, heat index values could reach over 100 degrees by Thursday. Some showers and thunderstorms may bring slight relief later in the week. Cooling shelters may open locally.

Records may be broken at the Montpelier observation station, with the current record high for June 30 at 92 degrees set in 2018. Wednesday's forecast calls for a high near 92 with a heat index as high as 99. Thursday's high could reach 94 with a heat index over 100. Friday and Saturday will see slightly lower temperatures but still oppressive humidity.

Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities during the peak heat, stay hydrated, and seek air-conditioned spaces. The heat is expected to ease by Sunday.
