A new column from Northeast Kingdom writer and educator Amanda Yoresh celebrates the rhythms of spring, from raising chickens to planting gardens. Yoresh, who describes herself as a Gen Z homesteader, writes about fulfilling a personal dream by raising 11 hens, currently housed in a tent in her craft room.
She recommends planting brassicas and root vegetables now, such as spinach, radishes, beets, carrots, and onions. For those seeking variety, Yoresh suggests trying new cultivars from seed companies like Johnny's Selected Seeds, MIGardener, John Scheepers, and Botanical Interests.
This year she and her family built elevated standing beds from spruce, noting that such beds dry out faster than ground beds but eliminate the need for kneeling. She also encourages spring cleaning, pruning plants near the house, and adding mulch to suppress weeds.
Yoresh advises readers to visit their local farmers market, plant a new flower variety, and spend time outside to spot migrating birds.
