Garret Keizer, a 73-year-old author who settled in Sutton and taught at Lake Region Union High School, has published a new collection of essays titled "Starting from Paterson." The book draws on his decades of work as a teacher, Episcopal lay vicar, and contributor to Harper's magazine.
Keizer will tour the state beginning June 16 in Hardwick, with additional stops July 6 in Essex, July 30 in Lyndonville, and August 26 in Norwich. The Lyndonville appearance is set for the Northeast Kingdom.
The collection includes essays on topics ranging from noise and climate change to encounters with figures like songwriter Leonard Cohen and the late global health pioneer Paul Farmer. Keizer also revisits his 2010 appearance on "The Colbert Report," where host Stephen Colbert quipped, "My noise is just very loud hope."
Keizer told VTDigger he remains hopeful despite troubling news. "When the alternatives come down between hope and despair, I might as well choose hope," he said. The book is published by EastOver Press, edited by Bennington College alumnus Walter M. Robinson.
