The Brighton Select Board voted June 17 to replace a security camera overlooking Lakeside Park following a string of vandalism to recreational equipment. Town Manager Mike Strait told the board the existing camera system had become outdated.

Brighton Recreation’s free equipment program, now in its third year, provides volleyballs, tennis balls, and basketballs for public use on the park’s courts. While most equipment has been well cared for, recent incidents include kickballs “willfully destroyed,” tennis balls dumped into the lake, and all volleyballs going missing, according to online posts and board discussion.

“We can’t see what’s going on over there, and that’s something we need to address,” Strait said. He noted the old camera had previously helped identify people damaging park property.

The cost of the replacement camera system was not paid from the town’s general fund, but the specific funding source was not disclosed in the select board meeting. Select Board Chair Mike Testut raised the issue with Strait after learning of the vandalism.
