The Barton Village Board of Trustees is seeking an electric rate increase of more than 14 percent, according to a notice posted this week. The proposed hike follows a 4.13 percent increase in 2025.
The increase is attributed to a state-mandated reserve fund requirement, payments on a municipal bond, and higher costs under Barton Electric's contract with the Orleans Electric Department, which maintains the village's power lines. Orleans Electric was recently seen working on lines in Barton Village.
Barton Electric provides electricity to village residents and businesses. The trustees will hold a public hearing on the proposed rate change before a final vote.
