Verizon Wireless is preparing to improve cellular service along Willoughby Lake Road after receiving a Certificate of Public Good from the state Public Utility Commission. The project involves installing equipment on an existing 139-foot telecommunications tower at 1916 Willoughby Lake Road.
The expansion was discussed at a recent Brownington selectboard meeting, where town clerk Cheryl Galipeau shared a letter from SBA Communications, the tower owner. The company asked what zoning or building permits the town requires. Because Brownington has no zoning regulations, the board informed SBA that no permits are needed.
The tower is already home to other wireless providers. Verizon's co-location there is expected to bring stronger and more reliable coverage to a rural stretch of the county.
NEK will be looking into whether other carriers have similar expansion plans for unzoned towns in the region.
