A Hardwick woman woke up Monday morning to a pickup truck crashing through her bedroom. The incident occurred before 7:30 a.m. when a white truck left South Main Street, clipped a garage, and struck a basement apartment, according to police.

All occupants escaped the building unharmed. The driver, identified as Dan Ayer, was transported to Copley Hospital. Police said Ayer may have suffered a medical emergency.

“There was a considerable amount of energy the truck was carrying when it hit the building, to result in what we’re seeing now. There’s more truck in the building than we are seeing outside,” said Hardwick Police Sgt. Dan Brunelle.

Crews and engineers spent the day assessing how to remove the vehicle. The crash caused critical damage to the structure. Four households and their pets have been displaced while police determine whether the building is habitable.

This is not the first time the building has been hit by a car. Police said a vehicle struck the building’s porch four years ago.
