Volunteers are needed to help care for newly planted trees along waterways in Craftsbury. The Trees for Streams program is holding two field sessions: Wednesday, June 17, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. along the Black River, and Wednesday, June 24, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at a tributary to Cass Brook on Jones Farm.
Tasks include locating and assessing young trees, checking survival rates, and managing invasive plants and competing vegetation. The plantings are intended to filter pollutants, stabilize eroding streambanks, reduce flood impacts, and shade waterways for aquatic life.
Participants must wear closed-toe, waterproof shoes and bring gloves and water. They should be able to walk moderate distances and lift 25 pounds or more. Sunscreen, bug repellent, and a hat are recommended. Lunch and tools will be provided. Specific directions will be shared after RSVP.
