Craftsbury is planning to replace the Town Hall roof before installing solar panels, a project that could be funded through a state energy grant.
During a Selectboard meeting this week, members reviewed two bids for the work. Mercia Construction of North Wolcott proposed $25,500, while Rodd Roofing bid $28,160. The bids cover only half of the roof. Rather than award a contract immediately, board members agreed to wait for estimates on replacing the entire roof.
Mercia Construction could start within two weeks, while Rodd Roofing said work could begin once the town completes paperwork and materials arrive.
The town received a Municipal Energy Resilience Program (MERP) grant about a year and a half ago. The grant supports energy-efficiency improvements including solar panels, heating system upgrades and insulation. Police said the current roof does not need replacement but is not strong enough for a solar array. Replacing it now avoids having to remove and reinstall panels later.
All MERP-funded work must be completed by the end of the year.
