The 39th annual Kirkin' of the Tartan will be held July 26 at 11 a.m. at the Walter Harvey Meeting House in the Mosquitoville section of Barnet. The event celebrates Scottish heritage and the community's Reformed Presbyterian, or Covenanter, tradition.
The Kirkin' of the Tartan is a Church of Scotland liturgy where Scottish families present their clan tartan for a blessing. The tradition recalls the period after the 1746 Battle of Culloden, when wearing tartans and playing bagpipes were banned in Scotland. Covenanter worship features unaccompanied psalm singing.
People of Scottish descent from across Vermont are expected to join area churches for the celebration. The event is free and open to all.
