The Salvation Army Northern New England Division announced June 16 that its thrift stores at 250 Railroad St. in St. Johnsbury and 7 Martin Drive in West Lebanon, N.H., will close permanently. The stores have served the communities for decades, offering low-cost clothing, home goods, furniture and household necessities.
“These two locations have supported their communities with dignity and compassion for decades,” said Maj. Shaun Belanger, divisional commander of the Northern New England Division. “After careful review, we determined that closing the stores is a necessary step to ensure that our programs and services remain strong.”
The organization stressed it is not leaving the communities. Local programs, including emergency assistance, food support, youth development, camp opportunities, seasonal programs and spiritual care, will continue without interruption. Services will also remain available through the Barre Corps Community Center at 25 Keith Ave. in Barre, Vt.
The Salvation Army has served both communities since January 1897. The closures are part of broader leadership and operational changes across the division, intended to strengthen long-term sustainability and focus resources on areas of greatest community impact, the organization said.
“Our mission guides every decision we make: to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs without discrimination,” Belanger said. “These changes allow us to honor that mission with clarity, compassion, and responsible stewardship.”
